The ancient art of roping livestock by the front legs is native to the Spanish southwest and is the preferred method on Mexican and South American ranches even in these modern times.  Tripping the animal in this manner enables a man on foot, or mounted on a small horse, to compensate for the weight difference of his captive.  It takes an enormous amount of skill to smoothly handle livestock in this manner and is proof of a cowboys abilities.  Today when shouts of “La Mangana” (La mon gone uh) ring out from dusty south Texas corrals as a calf is roped by the front feet - or “hands” as the Mexican cowboys call them - it causes the oldest cowboys to wistfully remember their best  years.  But more importantly it renews determination among the young stick horse cowboys as they continue their efforts, with cast off riatas, in throwing  “La Mangana” at forgetful ranch dogs and slow chickens.
