GIRLS GONE WILD
Some wild cows
are born, but most are made. Once the old girl finds she can
slip off down an arroyo, stop in a thicket or go over a fence, she will
remember and try this ploy at every chance- taking her calf and soon friends
with her. The baby calf who went the first year is soon a yearling
and then a big heifer with this sneaky trait instilled in her.
English bred cows usually affords a man a little lee way for such mistakes-
but the brahman influenced cow will savvy the mistakes a cowboy makes the
first time she encounters it.
A cowman is in the bankers office
borrowing some money.
“What breed of cows are you putting up?” asked
the banker.
“Well Mr. Banker, they're not really a breed,
just different colors.”
“The form wants to know what breed.”
“Mister, I trapped a bunch of the old girls
in a water lot last week. I was leaning on the gate enjoying my good
luck when a dust devil blew my hat off and rolled it through my herd.
The black cows went under the fence, the gray ones went over, the yellow
ones went through it and the red ones tried to eat my hat. Will that
fit in that space?”
One of two things will
happen with the cow here. She will throw her head up even higher
and start trotting your way, or she will snort, wheel and leave.
Whether you hear the sound of boards breaking, brush crashing or
wire squealing, you can bet she's going back to the “Girls Gone Wild”. |
